The Sarasota area leg of the tour will visit various stops on February 18th 2011, and will conclude with a panel discussion that evening from 5pm to 7pm at the State College of Florida. The Green Village on Anna Maria will be featured from 5pm to 7pm at the State College of Florida. The Green Village will be featured from 9am to 9.45am, and the Green Team behind the site will share their vision for the site.
FARE (the Florida Alliance for Renewable Energy) is a grassroots organization comprised of individuals, businesses, nonprofits , agricultural interests, legislators, policy-makers, and other groups with the goal of promoting renewable energy. Their mission: "Fare is dedicated to creating jobs and economic benefit to the citizens of Florida by the use of renewable energy through effective public policy".
The Historic Green Village aims to create a new standard for sustainability - the first LEED Platinum campus in Florida and the first Net Zero Energy campus in the US. Our campus covers 6 lots on the City of Anna Maria's Pine Avenue and at a full build-out will contain 7 commercial buildings and 2 rental units. Our goal is to showcase the best in sustainable design and technologies while maintaining the unique charm of our historic seaside community. Over the last six months we have planned and designed a wide range of strategies and technologies that demonstrate how we can foster a sustainable future while preserving the historic charm and scale of Anna Maria Island.
The project will feature:
HOT Technology: 100 kilowatts of Photovoltaics (PV) panels to generate electricity on-site and solar thermal panels to produce a steady supply of hot water for our cafe.
COOL Technology: Geothermal Cooling & Heating - using the constant temperature of the earth to reduce the energy required to cool & heat our buildings.
SMART Technology: from the simple 0 using cisterns to capture rainwater to irrigate our site and flush toilets, to High Performance equipment: all fixtures and appliances will be either EPA EnergyStar or WaterSense certified; ensuring that only the most-efficient equipment is used.
RECYLCING on a big scale - historic buildings, recycled materials, low-emitting paints, sealants and solvents, and a range of other sustainable design choices and materials selections choices that reflect our desire to have minimum impact on our environment.
